Is it closer? The spoken variant is probably slightly closer. But
does it matter? In my experience Byelorussian is a dying language. The
Belorussian government does not provide it with anywhere near the
support Ukrainian gets, most of the culture and entertainment is
provided in Russian, business is generally conducted in Russian. In
contrast with Ukraine, Belarus lacks a strong diaspora and the
Belorussian literary tradition is fairly meager compared to Ukrainian.
