He was still teaching first and second semester Chinese when I took it,
but unfortunatley I couldn't fit his class into my schedule, so took it
from someone who's name I don't even remember.

We did use Chao's _Mandarin Primer_, though (for a long time thereafter
I was able to recite Chao's version of "The Walrus and the Carpenter" in
probably horrid sounding Mandarin--right now I pretty much fall apart
after the "Shining with all his might" part). It's where the answers
are printed in the exercise volume that it says "Use 'em if'n you kin
read 'em."
