Middle Chinese pronunciation is no more speculative than Indo-European
pronunciation; it's based on the same sort of comparative analysis, and
has the bonus resource of the contemporary rhyme tables.

What sort of distinction are you trying to make? The early oracle bone
inscriptions _are_ from the lat(t)er Shang.
