operator=a symbol, signifying an operation
to be performed (math).
Are the operators used in maths a language all
their own?.
I just read about John Von Neumann.
it says...
"he was inspired by the new physical concepts
to make broader and deeper the purely mathematical
study of infinite-dimensional spaces and operators
on them. The basic insight was that the geometry
of the vectors in a Hilbert space has the same
formal properties as the states as a quantum
mechanical system. Once that is accepted, the
difference between a quantum physicist and a
mathematical operator-theorist becomes one of
language and emphasis only"
pp616, Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics
ed Timothy Ferris.
Has anyone and refs to dictonaries/sources
on the meanings and functions of the operators?
thank you
N
