A few years ago a well-known phonetician* said to me, on
learning of Kirshenbaum ASCII IPA, "It's too bad they went
to all that trouble when SAMPA was already available".

Kirshenbaum ASCII IPA was devised starting in August 1992**;
SAMPA, "in 1987-89"***.

One thing I like about SAMPA is the use of [Q] instead of
[A.] for [vwl,bck,low,rnd].

* I've suppressed the name of the well-known phonetician out
of respect for the privacy of e-mail.
