If I remember correctly (you can easily check on Google, if you really
care), he was born in the north of England, grew up and went to school in
Edinburgh, and did his degree at Oxbridge.
I don't know if he grew up with his quasi-RP accent (not uncommon among
upper-middle-class Scots), or whether he picked it up at Uni.
