"Serwus" is still used in Poland (especially the southern part, formerly
annected by Austria) in the meaning of "hello", although it becomes more
and more archaic...

Well, I suppose the Polish "cześć" as a greeting (probably with origins
of the nobles' greetings expressing a respect for each other) meaning
"hi" is older than a communist slogan of "cześć pracy". BTW, the
communist slogan form is sometimes used as humorous greeting (there are
no parties using communist new-speak, eg. commerade etc. wich have more
than a hundred or maybe thousand members in Poland any more -
descendants of the leading party from the period of 1945-89 try not to
be associated with that "fashion" of hammers, red stars etc.)
