Well, regarding English, at German universities there is a
distinction between Anglistik (British English studies) and
Amerikanistik (US American English studies). This is mainly
because there is a vast difference in the cultural environment
which is quite a part of the course of the English studies,
and of course the phonetics and even grammar differ somewhat.
