I'd have to write <kuSadAsi> for an Indian to get it right and a speech
sythesiser too would have to make the second vowel longer to get it
right.

That it's optional is what introduces the possibility that it would be
pronounced as long. "fuzz" would be spelt <faz> and tend to be
pronounced like <gaz>.
