It wasn't described in any of the grammar and course books I had then.
The many dictionaries I have don't mention it. They seem to assume the
readers (native speakers only?) already know. The only dictionary I
know (but dont own) that systematically lists such phenomena is the
"Dicionário da Língua Portuguesa Contemporânea" of the
"Academia das Ciências de Lisboa". (Links here:

It happens in some words, but not in others. How are foreign learners
to know if most modern books keep this a secret? I'm glad I have a
comprehensive list of them now in my own
