But Phipp's knowledge of Chinese did help in this situation. Without
knowing Chinese, he would have a hard time realizing what the student
really meant when he said "to play computer". Had he zero knowledge
of Chinese, he would have failed to catch this error, let alone
teaching the student the correct form and giving the explanation that
satisfied the curiosity of the student.
