Syllepsis exemption

AP lede
WASHINGTON - Sen. Russ Feingold, whose name has become synonymous with
campaign finance reform, is raising both his profile and thousands of
dollars with his new leadership political action committee.
The question is why this isn't felt as syllepsis.
Is a news lede exempted from rules of connection? I forget what
it's called - it has some apt name - but the genre allows piling
of lots of things in clauses of the first sentence, eg.
Born in Springfield, Watanabe opened a new store ...
and perhaps syllepsis detectors are disabled during that interval.
I think in the middle of a story, the raising of profile and dollars
would set something off.
