Montreal (Italian?) English

Luke Kirby stars in "Mambo Italiano", about the comedic family travails of a young gay man from Montreal's Italian neighborhood. His accent puzzled me: it didn't seem to be what I am used to in a Canadian English accent. I wondered whether it might have reflected the accent of first-generation Canadians raised in that neighborhood. But it also sounded familiar--it reminded me of Hayden Christensen's accent, particularly in "Shattered Glass". Kirby himself was born in Hamilton, Ontario.
Then I realized I'd seen Kirby's name before--in the cast of "Shattered Glass"--well, that probably has nothing to do with it, especially since his speaking role in that film was minimal. But Christensen is also Canadian, born in Vancouver and raised in Toronto.
In particular, I think it's the prosody of the two that strike me as familiar, not just the accent.
Is anyone here familiar enough with these actors or their places of origin to comment?
