Thanks again for the explanations. It shows that even when something is
explained clearly, it's still easy to misunderstand it. I've decided to
read a book on the periphery of phonetics and then see how I feel about
the subject, namely a book on the history of phonetics. That sounds like
that kind of thing I can read a page or two of per day over coffee and a
muffin.
I've gone a little further in Teach Yourself Hindi and noticed that that
the word for "today" is Aj. This reminds me of Italian oggi which in turn
reminds me of Latin hodie. I'd be very surprised is this is a coincidence.
