Why?

And how? Do you want "zhang" to be counted as "z", "h", "a", "n",
"g", or as "zh", "a", "ng" (i.e. treating digraphs as one atomic
unit)? And how about tone marks? You want "à" to be counted as "à"
(one accented character) or "a" and <tone 4>?
