Actually, this is not so, some will do it for you, others will let you do it
yourself, unless you're slow, infirm, or whatever. Tescos have mainly two of
types of counter, an express till where check-out assistant places the items
into bags for you, and the other type which are conveyor belt driven so the
items are put in the bags by the customer.

In Morrisons, the cashier asks whether you want assistance, if you're with
someone in a wheelchair/baby in a pram or whatever, similarly most other
major stores. Perhaps those saying you had to do it yourself is because
they're of fit body and appearance and able to do it themselves.

Does that straighten the situation out?
