I too used to be very puzzled by this sound, and I could hear no difference
(and still can't): czech, ukrainian, hindi?, but at least now I can produce
it (and here I hear the difference); I got the knack when I read a clear
description: the air stream has to be strong enough to make the vocal cords
vibrate, even with open glottis; try aha, aHa, then abHa, and try not to
confuse it with apha; good luck.
