Then, it may be described as a closed schwa; i.e., a short closed vowel of indistinct quality (it's quality presumably being determined largely by its context).

It never deviates from central (imo), being near midway between [i] and [u] with a little tilt toward [i]; I think our [u] usually alternates with something alike, but tilted toward [u].
Both are short.
All in all what I meant is that I think their quality is well defined.
