Not surprising. TeX's math "encoding" has got pretty wide acceptance.
But usually, other softwares only uses a subset of TeX. (TeX is too
powerful to fully emulate!)

Around 15 years ago, when I used Word Perfect, it had an equation
editor, too. It also uses a TeX "language" for typing the formulae.
I didn't know TeX at that time. But when I learnt (La)TeX, I
immediately recognized the similarity.

Undergraduate exams in what subject? History? Engineering maths? or
exams for final year math and physics courses?
