Helliconia is much like Aldiss is generally: promises much, achieves somewhat less. But it does have a truly great idea, and some of the text passages are magnificent. I'll never forget the feeling of loss and hopelessness when, at the end of sequence, the other sun (I forget which one :-)) sinks down and the long wintertime begins...


Helliconia doesn't form a coherent esthetic whole perhaps, but it contains so many fantastic "scenes" it's definitely worth reading.
