Actually, sending longer messages is no pain at all: the phone just splits whatever you wrote to small enough component parts (and of course, the phone company takes the charge of so-and-so many messages).

does not seem to be popular in the USA.

Wow, cultural dissonance. I hate talking on the phone, so when I was at last forced to have a mobile phone myself, I got used to sending mostly SMS's. (Now it's my favourite pastime when having a beer or two alone in a pub. Annoys my friends no measure but keeps me occupied :-))
