I don't think that's the reason; at least not for me or here in Finland. I just checked my latest phone bill, an the cost was just the same (6,9 Euro-cents per SMS or per minute).
I can't say anything on behalf of others, but my reason for SMSing is the same as for e-mailing instead of calling: that way you give the recipient the chance to answer you whenever it's most convenient to him. Cell phone calls always need to be started by asking "where are you" and "can you talk"--I hate that.
