Why?

Sounds normal enough to me. What would you call the person that
controls a glider? I have flown a glider a few times. I had an
instructor but I was in the "driving" seat and I would have described
myself as the pilot. I have also flown a plane and the two had a lot
in common.

I have also used text to send GPS data but not in conjunction with
flying. In my few trips, with or without an engine, I managed to
return to the intended airfield.

It sounds like glidering is suddenly the latest fad,

Unlikely. Most private aviation is much more expensive and bureaucracy-shackled on this side of the Atlantic.

with farmers
throughout the Isle fearing for their crops!

Unlike the situation with hot-air balloons, landing in fields is not the norm: the pilot's usual intention is to land back at an airfield.

Is it the new
trainspotting?

What was the old trainspotting?
