It isn't an alternative to PinYin. Pinyin serves many purposes,
including Chinese typing and transcription of Mandarin sounds.
Wubi is just another popular way to type Chinese. (There are dozens!)
It doesn't server the purpose to transcribe sounds. It encodes
Chinese characters according to shapes instead.
