I must say I find that very hard to believe. I've found that the alveolar
trill is fairly common among people over the age of, say, 55 (particularly,
but not exclusively, in rural areas), as well as among fado singers,
voiceover artists and radio sports commentators. It may be less usual in
some regions than in others (I'm most familiar with Lisbon, Setúbal and the
Alto Alentejo), but it definitely exists.
We are talking about [r:] as in Span. "tierra" here, aren't we?
