Typing Asian characters into computers

What do they do in China or Japan to enter characters into computers?
I saw a film called All About Lily Chouchou which showed a screen where
they typed in what appeared to be gobbledegook but when they were done
it would reappear as Japanese writing. What they typed had puntuation
and did not look like pinyin or the Japanese equivalent.
