I believe if you go down the Atificial Intelligence you need to know
something about machine translation and if you go into machine
translation or computer linguistics you certainly need some general
linguistic background: semantics, phonlogy, pragmatics...Linguistic
knowledge is important because artificial languages have also to deal
with linguistic issues.
As far as foreign languages are concerned I would say people need
English skills not only because a lot of literature has been published
in English but because almost all people, no matter what parts of the
world they are from, are interested in publishing their papers in
English to be read and to interact with people worldwide. Other
languages are useful to have more insight in different linguistic
systems.
