It was probably pronounced /Don Kishote/ by most people when it came
out, and the book's popularity during the author's lifetime meant it
was translated into many languages fairly quickly, and all of those
(that I know of) reflect the /sh/ pronunciation - Dom Quixote (with
/sh/ for 'x') in Portuguese, Don Chisciotte in Italian, Don Quichotte
in French, Don Quichot in Dutch. So I think it's safe to say that,
while the change Miguel describes was going on, /sh/ for 'x' remained
the correct 'literary' pronunciation.

As for the 'x'/'j' confusion in my post, I got 'tameji' and 'ameji'
from the English translation, but found 'tamexi' and 'amexi' in the
original Spanish. The English translator (who probably had no knowledge
of Arabic), in all likelihood simply mechanically replaced the 'x' with
'j' (as was done in many words) when transliterating the Arabic words
for the English translation.
