In German too (as the links you've given show) and there's also
the expression "Grauschimmel" meaning "grey 'schimmel'", i.e.
"grey white horse". Not to confuse with "Blauschimmel" (blue
'schimmel'),
which signifies the mold used in the production of certain types of
cheese like Roquefort.
