Euphony reasons perhaps? In English one could insert a schwa between 'm' and 'l', but in Latin languages 'Kreml' would be just impossible to pronounce.
Even if it didn't occur to us to pronounce the end of the word as we do for "camel", that wouldn't explain addition of an arbitrary syllable like "-in".
