You are right, but in the UK edition he is introduced later.

Indeed.

Another interesting difference is in chapter 11 of vol. 1. Dean
Thomas is yelling about giving somebody a red card. In the US
edition it has to be explained to Ron Weasley what the meaning
of a red card is.
