Moreover, /s/ = [s] can also exist between vowels, written <ss> or
<ç>.
And <ch> and <x> are also [S], regardless of position, except that <x>
sometimes (always?) behaves more or less (but not quite) like final
<s>, viz. in initial <exC> (C = any consonant).
