Re: Question about Spanish

How "degraged" is Chilean in comparison, which has given us Neruda and

at least sometimes.)

Don't ask me. I am still a novice as far as Spanish is concerned. I
have read Neruda, and don't find him degraded by any standard. The
reason why I mentioned Argentine or Rio de la Plata Spanish as a
divergent variety, is the well-known fact that Italian immigration has
been very heavy in that part of Spanish America, and that this has
given rise to mixed varieties and jargons. Buenos Aires criminal argot,
the lunfardo, is reputedly heavily Italianized - the name "lunfardo"
itself comes from "Lombardian" - and I have also heard that there is a
mixed Italian-Spanish variety called "cocoliche" spoken in Argentina,
which has influenced local substandard varieties of Spanish. However, I
am no expert, as I told.
