Re: Places to study linguistics in Canada

Ar an deichiú lá de mí Márta, scríobh Neeraj Mathur:

What anglophone Canadian universities have the best general
undergraduate linguistics progams? Thanks in advance!

Do you actually like languages? If so, why are you ruling out the
Francophone ones?

Presumably the student doesn't understand French well enough, or is not
confident enough, to undertake full-time study in French. That's a pretty
good reason, I'd think.

It’s _a_ reason, sure. My personal judgement is that if you’re in Canada,
your background is monolingual Anglophone (? how do most Canadians
capitalise that?) you’re in high school, and you haven’t learned enough
French, or don’t want to learn enough French to seriously consider studying
at a Francophone university--French is one of the _easier_ languages for
English-speakers to learn, after all--then perhaps linguistics isn’t for
you. Or perhaps whatever-uncle-Noam’s-field-is-being-called-these-days is
for you; in which case sci.lang still isn’t the ideal group to pose your
question.

(Now, the OP may be fluent already in two or three other languages, in which
case learning a few more will probably be doable. But it’s not extravagant
to imagine someone asking about Anglophone Canadian universities to be of
monolingual Anglophone background.)

But I'm curious: is there a particular Francophone Canadian university
that you are thinking of and would otherwise recommend?

No, I know lamentably little about Canadian universities in general :-( .
