<crculver@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>: in sci.lang:
The claim that Esperanto protects national languages is a recent fad,
which popped up in the last 30 years or so
Is that a fact? I remember being aware of the claim when I first got
into contact with Esperanto, which may have been as early as 1972.
and is used to maximise
funding from European institutions and give Esperantists
respectability at international NGO and governmental events. Before
that, the claim is nowhere to be found. Zamenhof himself said some
really frightful things about language diversity, including wishing
that eventually all national languages would disappear.
