The trouble with learning Nynorsk is that there aren't (or weren't
the last time I went looking) any textbooks to speak of.
True. I used the ones meant for Norwegian pupils whose primary
language is Bokmål.
Can I tempt you to think that this a not-small part of why persons
routinely spurn your advice to learn it first? (There is Brian's
suggestion of the last five (5) chapters of a dated textbook in German
that mostly handles Bokmål to consider to, but somehow that doesn't
quite seem a balance-tipper.)
In tribute to the AlG, I accordingly present my "N+1 Reasons Why No One
Learns Nynorsk As Their First Scandinavian L2". (Unlike Al, I'd be
happy to learn of errors.)
1) They've never heard of it. (Surprisingly easy.)
2) They can't find instructional materials.
3) They can't find practice materials. (I can read Bokmål newsbladets
like VG reasonably well using my Swedish. Whether I can read Nynorsk
newsbladets remains an open question, because I've yet to encounter
one.)
4) Bokmål is the dominant dialect in urban areas and Norway (like
everywhere else) is gradually urbanising; in particular, anyone
getting Norwegian thrust upon them for reasons of ex-patriotism is
more likely to benefit from Bokmål.
Your hypothesis (in another post) that Bokmål strikes persons as an
excellent compromise between the different flavours of Scandinavian
strikes me as being a good candidate for the teens, at best.
Is there even a "reference pronunciation"?
I think there is one, although I believe it's rarely used outside
theatres.
5)

only really needs a transcription of "Whales are yummy!"
