This thing that adults do is a different thing from what children
do. It's not meaningful to compare the speeds of the two processes
in this way.
I suppose, that the (wrong) prejudice is based on the fact that the time, level of attention and efforts children put in learning is extremely underestimated and at the same time the time, level of attention and efforts (the lazy and not really willing to learn) adults put in learning is overestimated.
