Some people just aren't all that good at pronunciation, in general.
Among native speakers of any language, there are those who can imitate
other accents (in acting, or telling ethnic jokes, or whatever), and
those who can't. I'm one of the ones who can't. My accent is fairly
slight, but it's there, and I'll probably always have it.
I know what I'm doing wrong, btw. It's not that I can't hear it.
I have the same problem when speaking German. Knowing and doing are
different things.
It's
just that I can't make my mouth do what it's supposed to be doing. For
instance, I know perfectly well that those around me pronounce
"wh"-words like "what" or "where" with an initial "h", and I don't.
When I try, it sounds ridiculous and wrong - so I don't even try.
I always hear pronouncing hw is the exception nowadays, and saying w
is mainstream? Anyway, you can't be accused of having a foreign accent
in English just because <w> and <wh> sound the same.
