actually, most people say "computer" in germany. in fact, if you're
referring to a generalized idea, like "i think i'll go buy a computer",
then it's (almost?) always referred to as a "computer". however, if
someone is talking about a single computer in a network, you often hear
"rechner".

at least, that is the distribution that I have encountered in
göttingen, among college students.
