Sorry. I can't get any books from Amazon at the time. This is where it
gets stuck. It's like sending me on a wild-goose chase. And I'll never
know what she did or whether I'm wrong,

Fair enough. And presumably you don't have access to a decent library
either. But you've got to acknowledge that rubbishing the well-known and
extensive research that others have done without knowing what it is, or
even
that it exists, is hardly the way to get anyone to take your own
speculations seriously.

if someone here doesn't run a
check on the book or lay serious objections on the line.

I don't think you're going to get any longer and more "serious" reviews
of
such an extensive body of work here than you have already.
The answers I've
already given are certainly much more detailed than is usual in a
newsgroup
posting.

Well, I appreciate it.

Thanks. But I'm not a linguist, and I'm certainly not up to date with the
latest. (I reckon I'd be about 10 years behind, as far as the typological
literature is concerned.)

Although it wouldn't be interesting, if it weren't extensive.

Hey, I think you misunderstand me! I wasn't referring to your body of work
as extensive (of course it may be, for all I know). I was referring to
Nichols' project, the one you wanted us to "run a check" on, which, as I
understand it, involved a decade or more's work by her and her research
assistants. I was also thinking of all the other work -- many lifetimes'
worth -- that's been done on linguistic typology, from Greenberg on. That's
what I mean by "an extensive body of work".

We're not doing this because it's easy, you know.

I think I'll prepare a quick-and-dirty web article and put it online.
That would help me to determine if I'm seeing things or not.

Why not submit to a recognised journal? If they think there's anything in
what you're pushing, the referees will give you much more professional help
than you'll ever get online.

John.
