The term ?al-Ja:hili:ya refers to the pre-Islamic paganism or a state
of of ignorance. The three consonants JHL which carry the core meaning
refer to the state of not knowing. Arabs claim it was called
?al-Ja:hili:ya because they were ignorant of Islam and not because of
their ignorance in general. This explanation doesn't seem convincing to
me. Any ideas.
why not? the Jahiliyya period was regarded as the prisitine state of
Arabic and the time of best poetry. so they were not that "ignorant".
