Etymology of "Ketzer"

Hi All,

I'm curious about the etymology of the German word "Ketzer" which means
"heretic" in English.

On-line information is extremely confusing and rather bizarre. I would like
to know if there is any reliable information to be had about this word.

How did it come about? Can anyone here help me out?

Thanks,

Heidi
