Patterns of phoneme sequences in words

Is there any tendency for the phoneme sequences that appear in words
(or perhaps I should say "that appear as words") to conform to general
patterns? For example, might there be a general tendency for
fricatives to appear before affricates? Or for front vowels to appear
before back vowels? Open vowels before closed vowels? Or possibly more
complex patterns than that (I made those up to explain the question).
I'm curious about other languages as well as English.
thanks,
