Yeah. Young Finns speak English excellently. They can even watch
Hollywood movies on TV *in English*. (My Finnish friend told me that
the TV stations once attempted to show some movies *dubbed* in
Finnish. The audience were disappointed. They'd rather have those
movies in the original language. Even those older Finns who can't
understand English prefer to have the movies shown in English,
accompanied with Finnish subtitles. The dubbing certainly sucks!)
Maybe the custom to send foreign movies with subtitles rather than dubbed
contributes to the language abilities of these people. I would love it if
dubbing was banned over here - it's not only the language training aspect,
it's a question of attitude towards a work of art.
