Surely. But Peter T. Daniels has previously and now expressed his
firm intentions to remain ignorant of all this.

It has nothing to do with linguistics.

No linguist needs to know how a tyepsetter comes up with an apt
representation of what s/he wishes to appear in the final product.

Thank you for an eloquent expression of your intentions as I described them.
You have clearly told that you do not understand the "character" concept (a
fundamental concept in all written languages and written notations) and its
difference from the glyph concept and typesetting. That's not uncommon; it
is indeed a difficult question. What matters is that you have decided to
remain ignorant of this and regard it as a virtue.

Luckily, we can ignore your comments on that, just as you should ignore
messages and threads that you don't want to understand. I wouldn't otherwise
have commented on your content-free protest, but I wished to make it clear
to people who _can_ and wish to discuss this topic here that your messages
on it can be safely ignored, even though you have expertise in other fields.

If you choose to redefine "character" as having something to do with
computers, feel free to do so. But that doesn't give you license to
discuss computers in sci.lang, which is about language and linguistics,
not computers.
