Indian scripts

Why didn't the Indians stick to the Brahmi script but proceeeded
instead to develop some handful of graphically much more elaborate
scripts that basically differ from Brahmi only by the shape of the
characters?

Was this development driven by esthetics/calligraphy only or are there
other reasons?
