Other way round, surely! As you say, we're technically the United
Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. 'Great Britain' has no
political sense as such.

'Britain' has a use only as shorthand as far as I'm aware - for most
people, as a name for our nation state. To that extent, it's a
political term. (Some of the population of) Northern Ireland considers
itself to be part of 'Britain'. Great Britain is the name of the
largest island in the group of islands which constitutes the British
Isles.


This includes
the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland)

Great Britain comprises England, Scotland and Wales. The United Kingdom
is Great Britain plus Northern Ireland.
