I tend to agree that it is not Chinese cursive script. The
characters look like they are inscribed directly by an blunt
and hard instrument on a semi-soft medium.
The far-left and mid-right characters: they look like they
could be written from right to left in one stroke, followed
by the squiggle on the left. Pausible match with any of the
many right-to-left scripts in the world?
The far-right character. The top half seems to be written
in a left-right two stroke combination, and the lower half
a right-left one.
The apparent stroke direction seems to be all wrong for
Chinese script.
Are you looking at the picture of the seal, or at one of the confusing
flopped pictures pretending to be a picture of an impression?
I was looking at the original picture at
http://www.syrtis.demon.co.uk/images/ring.png
The marking looks like dents on a surface, and the surface is
surrounded by an elevated rim. We know that it is the rim
that is elevated and not vice versa because this interpretation
is compatible with the apparent orientation of the side surface.
Because of the elevated rim, the surface depicted in the
picture cannot be the imprinting side of a seal. (The origin
post ust said "ring", not a signet ring.)
Thus there is no reason to think that the marking is a mirror
image of intended design unless the picture itself has
been flipped.
