How did I get into this discussion? Are you angry at me
because I told you once that "idiotic" also has a positive
meaning, preserved in the terminus technicus idiotic style
for a writing style that closely, effortlessely and elegantly
follows every bend of a topic? Sigmund Freud was praised
for his idiotic style. As for Lepanto: the Lexicon Latinitatis
Medii Aevi Iugoslaviae, Zagrabiae 1974, gives:
lepa, f. (ven.) - piscium genus, Crenilabrus pavo:
vrsto ribe, lumbrak, smokvica
Stat. Polae 300/32 a, a. 1431; ---
de infrasciptis piscibus ... De lepis ...
Lepa was a genus of fish living in the region of venete
(ven.), hence in the Venetian Gulf, so I guess the
harbor Lepanto was named for this kind of fish.

Franz,
The problem is more complex than what most people may realize.
It is easy to say that Lepanto was named according to the fish 'lepa';
but how do you mean to prove that!
