Last week on *Dancing with the Stars*, the (English) voice-over
announcer said, again and again, /dans D@ 's&mb@/, which in American,
of course, is /d&ns D@ 'samb@/.
Curious. And jarring!
For you maybe. As you know, we tend to anglicise the pronunciation of
foriegn borrowings much more than you do.
You'd think pattern pressure would've made him settle on one or the
other vowel, as in "Maltese falcon" -- "falcon" is normally /'f&lk@n/,
but not in that phrase.
As another example, I first
learned the word <junta> as /hUnt@/ when I was in California, and even
now, forty years later, I still find /dZV"nt@/, the standard Brit and
Australian pronunciation of the word, irritating.
Our newspeople went back and forth on that one for a while, when
Central America was in the news, but eventually settled on the /hu/
version not the /j@/ version (just keeping my phonemes in their place).
